Who was the only eligible incumbent U.S. president not to be his party renomination for a second term?

Jimmy Carter
Franklin Pierce
Grover Cleveland
George H. W. Bush

Franklin Pierce (Democrat) was the 14th president of the United States, serving from 1853 to 1857. His pro-Southern views and support for the Kansas-Nebraska Act severely harmed his popularity with a large number of Northern Democrats. In 1856, when delegates gathered in Cincinnati for their convention, fellow Democrats refused to renominate him and instead nominated James Buchanan, who was a less controversial candidate. This marked the only time in U.S. history that an elected president who was an active candidate for reelection was not nominated by his political party for a second term.

The correct answer is Franklin Pierce.
